The International English Language Testing System

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training

Academic -for people applying for higher education or professional registration.

General Training -for those migrating to Australia, Canada, and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programs, and work experience in an English-speaking environment.

Modules in IELTS:

There are four modules in IELTS:

 Listening:

Listening is the same in both Academic and General tests. Everyone takes the same listening test with the same scoring. This section tests an applicant’s ability to understand the main ideas and detailed functional information, opinions, and attitudes of speakers and the ability to understand the purpose of an utterance, and the ability to give attention to the development of ideas.

Speaking:

This component also remains the same for everyone. There is only one speaking test with the same scoring. Examiner asks about the applicant’s home, family, work, studies, etc in part 1. The applicants will be given a card on a particular situation and they will get 1 minute to prepare on the topic and 2 minutes to speak about it in part 2. In part 3, students can discuss more abstract ideas and issues on topics asked in part 2.

Reading:

Reading test is slightly different in both Academic & General. The question type is 100% the same, but the passages have different content & layout. Academic reading consists of 40 questions in which applicants are judged on how they read gist on a piece of the given information, how they are able to skim, read details, understand logical arguments and recognize the writer’s opinion. While in General Training there are 3 sections in reading.

Section 1:

It contains basic linguistic tasks that mainly require retrieving and providing general factual information.

Section 2:

It contains contexts about the workplace.

Section 3:

It is about reading extended prose with a complex structure.

Writing (Task 1):

General Training Students will need to write a  letter requesting information. The letter may be personal, informal, or semi-formal in writing task 1 but Academic Students will need to write a report in a completely formal style.

Writing (Task 2):

General Training Students will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem which can be fairly personal in style. While Academic Students will be asked to write an essay in agreeing or disagreeing manner/discussing two given opposing views/ advantages of a given development outweigh the drawbacks / explaining the cause of the problem and offer solutions.

Accomplishing a key improvement in IELTS requires significant investment, work, and persistence. There is no uncertainty about that. Yet, it has been found that individuals regularly neglect some initial steps they can take to fundamentally raise their scores in IELTS.

So, if you have limited time and study abroad/immigration is the purpose, then no worries. You can prepare for IELTS but you need to utilize your time for as much practice as possible.

Tips and Tricks of IETLS:

Below are few tips and tricks to become more proficient in IELTS.

Spend a minimum of 2.5 hours per day.

You can start from any component. It can be Listening/Reading/Writing/ Speaking but keep up focused and give proper time to do the practice of that particular component and then move towards the next component.

Start off with the best books of IELTS like TargetBand7, Barron’s IELTS Superpack, and Insight into IELTS. These books will give you an orientation towards the exam as you nothing about the exam initially.

Have cambridge books and online resources for practice tests.

Watch English movies without subtitles and try to follow most of the sentences to meet listening criteria.  That will also boost up your confidence

Go through and read lengthy newspaper articles every day. And in practice tests just play around with Skimming and Scanning.

Take assessments component-wise and try to remember the tips and apply them during the practice tests

In writing make sure you don’t write off-topic. Be straightforward and clear. Use synonyms and linkers. Answer all parts of the question. Again, practice a lot!

From the speaking aspect be confident when you speak. Don’t get nervous. Make mistakes but practice more and use fillers in pauses.

Keep in mind that never appear in the final test of IELTS until you’re fully prepared to play in the ground. In Pakistan, the registration fee of Test Centres is more than 30,000PKR which is a huge amount of course. So, save your money and time until you observe yourself up to the mark to go-ahead
